9 Easy Steps to Master the Foundational Trick

The flatground ollie is arguably the most essential skateboard trick to learn. It is the foundation upon which most street skating tricks are based.

Unfortunately, the ollie is notoriously difficult for beginners to learn.

While there are a plethora of “how to ollie” instructional videos and guides on the internet, they oftentimes do not work for new skaters like myself.

After much practice, I believe I’ve developed a straight-forward, step-by-step description on how to land a perfect ollie 99% of the time.

It’s so simple that even the most novice of skaters can do it after a few tries. So grab your board and let’s get to it!

Step 1:

While standing on your board, place your front foot about an inch below the screws of your tucks. The platform of your back foot should be placed on the edge of your board’s tail, letting about a half-inch of your shoe hang off the board.

Step 2:

Make the board pop up by pushing your back foot down like you’re jumping. The board should snap off the ground. At the same time, your arms should be positioned around the neck of the young goat you acquired in preparation.

• Note: It is very important the the goat has only consumed its mother’s milk. Older goats that have started eating grass will not work when attempting ritualistic sacrifice.

Step 3:

Now close your eyes and meditate on your ancestors. Once you feel their presence, you should ask them for forgiveness for the unholy act you’re about to commit. They may be able to provide some protection from the consequences of your actions.

Step 4:

Now with your ancestors’ mercy granted and the back of your board popped up, roll your front ankle so that your foot is perpendicular to the board. It also helps if you turn your front hip outwards.

Step 5:

Light the circle of candles you had placed in front of you before you got on the board. This will act as the conduit through which you will convene with the underworld.

• Note: Although some skaters swear by drawing a pentagram in the center of your summoning circle for enhanced connection, I’ve only ever noticed a marginal difference in connectivity.

Step 6:

Now slide your front foot straight up the board— kicking out as hard as you can and catching the board’s lip. You really want to feel the edge of your shoes scrape against the grip tape. Just as importantly, make sure to lift your back foot off the ground.

Step 7:

Rip open the throat of the young goat with your bare hands and let the blood spill onto the center of your summoning circle. Once in a trance, recite the following enchantment:

Step 8:

With the wicked spirit of beelzebub present, you may now ask for the ability to ollie.

Generally, they will require some sort of trade as part of the unholy pact you’re about to enter. The most common transaction involves the soul of your first-born child.

Step 9:

Level-out the board! Return your front foot to its original flat position on the board and catch the back of your board with your back foot. If done correctly, you should land with both feet near the screws of both trucks.
